Salisbury, Md. (DELMARVA NEWS NOW) — Public officials with the Wicomico County government are urging the public to consider purchasing flood insurance for their homes, ahead of peak Hurricane Season.
Officials say major rain events not associated with a hurricane have even caused serious flooding, something Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver says highlights the need for flood insurance. “When a 4″, 6″ or 8″ rain event occurs, it can cause serious flooding damage to property.”
Most homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover damage caused by flooding, although Wicomico County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program, which offers homeowners in the County an opportunity to purchase policies through the government at a discounted rate. Officials also say that flood insurance is available to all homeowners, regardless of whether the property lies within a mapped floodplain. Although flood insurance has to be purchased 30 days before an event to receive coverage.
The Wicomico County Planning and Zoning staff says they are available to help guide homeowners through the flood risk and flood insurance process. Questions can be sent to Marilyn Williams, the county’s floodplain coordinator at [email protected] or at (410) 548-4810.
